About the Role:

Are you passionate about Engineering?  Looking for a new challenge? Do you have experience as Control System Technical Support Engineer?

As an inclusive, forward-thinking business, we take pride in our approach to investing in our people across Avara Foods and are looking for a highly competent and motivated Engineer to join our Engineering Team, based at our Telford site.

The role is a combination of factory- based and office based so you’ll be working in a fast-paced, dynamic FMCG factory environment which is noisy and refrigerated in some areas, manufacturing short shelf life products where hygiene standards are critical.  As a Control System Technical Support Engineer you’ll be working Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00.
 

What will you be doing as Control System Technical Support Engineer at Avara?

As a Control System Technical Support Engineer, you will provide technical support, fault diagnosis, and continuous improvement for site automation systems, including Siemens TIA Portal, WINCC, SCADA/HMI platforms, SQL databases, industrial networking, and system integration. You will also support system development and ensure compliance within control systems
 
What will your key responsibilities as a Control System Technical Support Engineer include?
  • Provide Level 3 technical support for Siemens TIA Portal systems and SCADA/HMI platforms (WinCC, Proface, Weintek).
  • Troubleshoot and maintain industrial automation systems, including VSDs and multidisciplinary setups (mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic).
  • Monitor and maintain control system performance through preventative maintenance and system updates.
  • Work with OPC communication protocols (Kepware, OPC UA/DA) and Modbus TCP/IP networks.
  • Develop and support automation software using C#, Visual Basic, Linux, and SQL.
  • Configure and maintain industrial networks and integrate new equipment with legacy systems.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of logic changes, wiring diagrams, and system backups
  • Maintain compliance with industrial and cyber-security standards (e.g., IEC 62443, NIS2, GAMP).
  • Support commissioning, FAT/SAT testing, and the deployment of automation projects.
  • Provide training to operators, technicians, and junior engineers on system operation and troubleshooting.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and promote knowledge sharing across teams.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying system issues, supporting root cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions.
What you’ll need to be successful:
 
  • HNC/HND or higher in Electrical, Industrial Electrical Control, or Automation Systems.
  • Siemens TIA Portal Level 3 programming certification.
  • Additional certifications in industrial networking, safety systems, or SCADA (preferred).
  • BS7671 17th or 18th Edition (desirable).
  • Strong hands-on experience with both hardware and software in automation systems.
  • Excellent electrical fault-finding skills and ability to read electrical schematics.
  • Familiarity with process machinery, food manufacturing, air systems, and pneumatics.
  • Mechanical fitting capability and experience.
  • Proven problem-solver with a proactive, detail-oriented mindset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; confident team collaborator.
  • Ability to mentor Maintenance Engineers and Apprentices.
  • Self-motivated and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable working independently or as part of a team.
