What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a real job where Apprentices learn, gain experience and get paid. By the end of an apprenticeship, apprentices will have the right skills and knowledge needed for their chosen career. Each apprenticeship has a level and an equivalent education level. You can start an apprenticeship at any level. It can take between one and six years to complete an apprenticeship depending on each course, what level it is and your previous experience. It’s fully funded by the employer and all apprentices come out with nationally or internationally recognised qualifications.

  • Learn and train for a specific job
  • Earn at least the National Living Wage regardless of age.
  • Get hands-on experience in a real job
  • Study for at least 20% of their working hours – usually at college, university or with a training provider
  • Complete assessments during and at the end of the apprenticeship
